Summary:
A
recent breakthrough in
gene-editing process can be used to eradicate genetic diseases in humans and to
make a person more intelligent or attractive. The Crispr-Cas9 or technique
involves making DNA-altering changes to sperm, eggs, or embryos that could then
be inherited by future generations. For example, negative mutations could be
replaced with corrected DNA strings. The technique is relatively easy for
anyone who knows about molecular biology, and it's already been tested.
Although this process has many advantages there are some ethicists say editing
human DNA to boost intelligence or beauty should never be attempted, but there
are also potential dangers as the process can change genes apart from the ones
intended.
Analysis:
I feel that this is a revolutionary process.
The means to edit the very fabric of our lives can have huge effects in
everything in the future. We can cure diseases and change the course of
evolution. However there are many people who are afraid of how ethical this
process is. If this technology exists it can lead to doom as well.
Questions:
1. Do you feel that it is moral to be able to change the genes of humans?
2. To what extent should this technology be used?
