Where Have the Astronauts Gone?

  • Briefly explain why you are interested in studying your topic:
    • I became very interested in science when I knew that I wanted to be a teacher, but didn’t know of what subject. During my Invite to Teach internship, 1st semester senior year, I was assigned a 7th grade science classroom that was studying astronomy. Being consistently exposed to a classroom full of people interested in space made me interested in space. It made me realise that despite the many advances in the field, the world governments have not been investing in space programs. I want to know why.

  • The overall question I plan on answering by the end of the project:
    • What are the benefits and costs of space exploration?

  • Sub questions I will need to answer in order to answer the overall question:
    • What caused the disinterest in space?
    • Why don’t governments invest more in space programs?
    • Where does the money go?
    • What benefits have we already received, and what would be to come?

  • My plan of research (what specific Library Databases, specific websites, names of authors, people, etc. will I pursue to find the answers to the questions above):
    • People: Neil Degrasse Tyson, Stephen Hawking, Charles F. Bolden Jr
    • Websites: NASA.gov, ESA.int
    • Databases: Science in Context, World History in Context, Global Issues in Context
