Bring Back the Bravo:
- Attending symphonies, operas and classical performances for most of my life, I notice there are not many attendants members from the young generation. This concerns performing art organizations because they are losing audience members. I am passionate for fine arts in music, and thus wanting to study music administration in college, I want to learn about why people are losing interest in the classical genre.
- How can the classical industry survive?
- Are classical organizations losing money in ticket sales? Are smaller and local symphonies going out of business because people are only paying to see the larger symphonies(for example, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra)? What reasons do young adults have for not liking classical music? Are opera tickets too expensive? Could marketing/advertising potentially help the industry?
- I plan to use ProQuest as a database to help me find reasons why there is less interest in classical music than ever before. Reading interviews by conductors and art directors in the music industry would help me see their perspective about performance, for example, Riccardo Muti. I can look at differences in large orchestra’s websites and compare them to smaller orchestras; cso.org / dupagesymphony.org. Similarly, I will compare different Lyric Opera websites. This will help me to see the difference of public display, and I can see if this relates to the success of an organization. I will contact a music director at a college I plan on attending to see their perspective on the subject.
