The Wealth of Traveling

Briefly explain why you are interested in studying your topic:
As long as I can remember, my mother has always told me that traveling can open world of knowledge and expand your perspective on life.  In the past, we have traveled to places like France, Italy, Austria, and Germany. When I do go on vacation, I’m eager to take advantage of my foreign surroundings. Visiting, national and historical sites, world renown museums, and family friends my vacations are anything but relaxing. Some of my most fondest memories have come from my travels. However, the personal wealth of travel can often be limited by the soaring price.

The overall question I plan on answering by the end of the project:
Does the benefit of traveling outweigh the lofty prices?

Sub questions I will need to answer in order to answer the overall question:
  • What is the cost of traveling (breakdown the specific expenditures)
  • Why is the price so high? (airplanes, hotels, attractions)
  • Who determines these prices?
  • What is the future for the travel industry?
  • How can people travel on a budget?
  • What societal groups travel the most? (Different perceptions of travel as it pertains to culture)
  • How has the travel industry changed over the years? (airplane, travel agents, hotels, attractions, transportation, tourism)
  • What are the economic benefits of tourism?
  • Is the cost of traveling truly worth it?/What “personal wealth” do we gain through travel?

My plan of research:
-travel magazines, periodicals/articles
-interview owner of travel agency (family friend)
-school databases (specific to travel industry)
-USA Today
-Boston Globe
-U.S. Travel Association
