Do Animals have Rights?

I am interested in researching if holding animals in captivity is morally correct and the effects of it because of two reasons. The first reason was that after visiting the Brookfield Zoo over the summer, seeing the polar bear exhibit made me think about how a polar bear should be in a cold climate, surrounded by snow and ice near the ocean, not standing on a concrete platform in 90 degree weather. The second reason that opened my eyes to this topic was after I watched the documentary Blackfish which explains that animals in captivity after a long period of time will outlash at their trainers or zoo keepers and will greatly injure or even kill them.

  • The overall question I plan on answering by the end of the project:
What rights should animals have, especially in captivity?

  • Sub questions I will need to answer in order to answer the overall question:
    • What are the negative effects of holding an animal in captivity?
    • Should animals have the right to remain free in the wild and not held captive in zoo’s, aquariums, ect. across the world?
    • Does holding animals in captivity have any positive effects? Such as breeding of endangered species? ex. Tigers, polar bears, panda bears, ect?
